Classroom Prayers for the Liturgical Season of Advent
Advent Prayer while lighting Advent Candle
God of Hope,
As light comes to us from the Advent candle, May the blessing of your Son, Jesus, be with us; Warming our hearts and brightening our way. During this Advent Season this candle is a beacon of Hope as we prepare for the coming light of Christ, Who brings forgiveness and healing to our world. Amen. Give Us Advent Hearts
Introduction
Advent is a time of anticipation and preparation for the birth of Jesus. It is a time for Christians to reflect upon what they can share with others in return for all the gifts God has given them, especially the gift of Jesus.
To Prepare
On your prayer table, place a Bible and a candle (or your Advent wreath).
Leader: Jesus, we want to prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate your birthday at Christmas. We want to think of things we can give you. Christmas is your birthday and we want to prepare presents for you. Help us to forget about ourselves for a while and to think only of you and how we can offer you love and joy.
All: May we offer you only love and joy this Advent.
Leader: Jesus, teach us how to think about you this Advent. Teach us to reach out to others, to the poor, the lonely, the sick and the hungry. When we give gifts to them, we are giving gifts to you. Help us to be generous. Help us to be strong. We ask these things in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen
(Costello, 1997, p. 6-7).

Advent Prayer
O God,
we wait for so many things – peace in our world, good news, solutions to
problems. Lord, grant us patience, the patience of suffering in order to bring
about what is awaited; the patience of a vibrant hope that what is awaited will
come into being. May we await your second coming in prayerful awareness of many
times you come to us each day.
(Schneider,1999, p. 63)

Prayer for the First Sunday of Advent
Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty
God,
The resolve to run forth to meet your Christ
With righteous deeds at his coming,
So that, gathered at his right hand,
They may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
Who live and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever.

With righteous deeds at his coming,
So that, gathered at his right hand,
They may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
Who live and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever.
Prayer for the Third Sunday of Advent
O God, who see how your people
faithfully await the feast of the Lord’s Nativity,
enable us, we pray,
to attain the joys of so great a salvation,
and to celebrate them always
with solemn worship and glad rejoicing.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
Who live and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever.

Prayer for the Fourth Sunday of Advent
Pour
forth, we beseech you, O Lord,
your grace into our hearts,
that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son
was made known by the message of an Angel,
may by his Passion and Cross
be brought to the glory of his Resurrection.

Who live and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
